A class
may start with a discussion to introduce the topic of the text to the students.
The text is usually a reading passage or a dialogue presenting one aspect of
every day life. After the students read the passage, the teacher explains the
new vocabularies through actions, pictures, and real objects (realia). At this
stage, the students are required to ask any questions they may have on the
comprehension of the passage. Then the teacher asks some questions to check the
student's understanding of different lexical, grammatical, and cultural points
that may be new to them. In this way, the teacher encourages the students to
ask similar questions from each other or from the whole class. Students are
also directed to use the grammatical and lexical items they have learned, in
completely new contexts. This may be done orally or in written form.
